Director Steven Glaudini and his talented cast do everything right in Musical Theatre West’s terrific new production of the 1953 Broadway smash The Pajama Game. The recent Broadway revival with Harry Connick, Jr. sparked interest in this tuneful 50s classic, and MTW’s production makes it clear why the show remains as fresh as ever in 2007.

Broadway’s Darcie Roberts radiates charisma in the role of Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory’s grievance committee chairman Babe Williams, a role created by Janis Paige but probably best known as one of Doris Day’s most famous creations. Leggy and statuesque with a voice like honey and star quality coming from every pore, Roberts couldn’t be better. And just like Sid Sorokin, whose first song is "A New Town is a Blue Town," tall handsome Paul Dean is the new man in town. Recently arrived in Long Beach, Dean has the voice of a crooner and enough charm to woo a stunner like Roberts. Roberts and Deans' duets (the seductive "Small Talk," the rambunctious "There Once Was A Man," and the heartstring-tugging "Hey There (reprise)/When You Win, You Lose") are all show-stoppers.

Love at Work Risky in "Pajama"

by James Scarborough

Gazette Newspapers

Sassy and full of “I know that one!” songs, “The Pajama Game,” directed by Steven Glaudini, with musical direction by Daniel Thomas, at the Carpenter Center for Musical Theatre West, gives new meaning to labor sleeping with management.

Written by George Abbott and Richard Bissell, with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, the story uses labor negotiations to talk about love.

The musical opens with strike talk at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. The union wants a 7-1/2 cents an hour wage increase. Boss Mr. Hasler (Nils Anderson) balks. Though on opposite sides of the dispute, factory superintendent Sid Sorokin (the shy but loveable Paul Dean) and union rep Babe Williams (Darcie Roberts) fall in love.

The Pajama Game

Bright and brassy. Sexy and sassy!

There's unrest at the Sleep Tite Pajama Factory when Sid and Babe sit on opposite sides of the negotiating table, clashing over a seven-and-a-half-cent raise. But love threatens to shut down the plant as the battle of the sexes plays out in this rollicking classic from the Golden Age of musical comedy. The Pajama Game is a hit parade of irresistible songs including "Hey There", "Hernando's Hideaway" and “Steam Heat".

A Thoroughly Modern 'Pajama Game'
Musical Theatre West brings a fresh touch to the sexy '50s musical about a labor dispute and a love connection.

By Charlotte Stoudt, Special to The Times

A strike looms. Tempers flare. Management and labor are at each other's throats. But these disgruntled employees are in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, not Hollywood, and they're demanding a 7 1/2 -cent raise, not new-media residuals. In "The Pajama Game," the 1954 Adler and Ross classic, love means taking a stand for what you believe in, even if your squeeze is on the other side of the negotiating table.

Whatever your position, those of you with time on your hands might want to head down to the Carpenter Performing Arts Center to take in Musical Theatre West's spirited production, which does affectionate justice to this immensely affable show and its surfeit of irresistible tunes, including "Hey There," "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway."

‘Pajama Game’

Wears Well

by Marchelle Hammack

The Long Beach Beachcomber

Hurry, hurry and get tickets for “The Pajama Game,” produced by Musical Theatre West. It’s a short three week run (two weekends left) and it is a joy. Who wouldda thunk a musical about an Iowa pajama factory in 1954 could be so relevant and fresh in 2007?

Anyone familiar with MTW is aware of the Broadway-quality professionalism inherent in their productions and that the talent is often straight from Broadway. For instance, Darcie Roberts, who plays the lead, Babe Williams, has just come from her Broadway show “Curtains.” And Terra C. MacLeod, who plays Gladys, has just completed her run as Velma Kelly in Broadway’s production of “Chicago.”
